    SWOS Online

    Back to Experts Guide

(Thanks to Jarkko and Paul Jackson for supplying me with files and information to help make this page possible!)

For years there has been one thing missing from SWOS that it's fans have yearned after. Something that even the mighty SWOS could not provide. That was the ability to play people many many miles away over the vast connection of wires that is the internet. Until now people have somewhat quenched these desires with competitions ran by various websites whereby people tested their skills against others by pitting their abilities against computer teams in specifically designed DIY tournaments. However yearn no more, for here is the information SWOS fans all over the world has been dieing to receive.

    SWOS Over The Internet!!

Yes, believe it or not, it is now possible. Infact it has been possible for a while, but I failed to realise how easy it actually was, and so didn't believe it was worth unleashing the details to a mass audience. However, having tryed it for myself, I can highly reccommend it! However to get satisfactory results you'll need a decent internet connection speed. You need to be able to achieve a consistent "ping" of under 150. this means, in plain english, that you'll probably need at the very least a connection of 56k. This unfortunately will probably rule the majority out, but for the rest of us, here's how you go about playing Sensi online.

There are two ways in which this can be achieved. You can either use a megadrive emulater and the Sensi ROM for it, or an Amiga emulater with a SWOS ROM. Here is advice on how to achieve online SWOS with both versions!

    Megadrive Sensi International Soccer Online

1.) Make absolutely sure your connection is fast enough
Don't be fooled into thinking that just because your modem is 56k, that you are going to have a 56k connection. For example - a lot of the regular phone lines around the UK will actually only carry around 49k, and so this may be the maximum you can achieve. To guarantee a 56k connection, you may be looking at ISDN or broadband. Having said that if you are only playing people fairly locally (eg within Europe, within US etc) you'll probably get away with a standard modem connection - just be aware that it will slow down from time to time.

2.) Download Sega MD Emulater and SWOS ROM
The version of Sensi you can play across the 'net is actually an emulated version of Sensible Soccer International Edition, on the Megadrive. So, to play it you need both the megadrive emulater and the SWOS ROM for it. Don't worry though, you can get them both from the downloads section of this site.

    3.) Find a mate
You'll be very lucky to randomly find a Sensi player on one of the servers, so you'll have to find a mate who wants to play and who also has a fast enough connection. At the top of these instructions, you will find a list of people who may be willing to play. Once you find your opponent, and you are both connected to the 'net and ready to play, load up your emulaters, and load up the Sensi ROM. Please note - the ROM must be named EXACTLY the same on both players machines otherwise things will go wrong!!

    4.) Find a server
Once you and your opponent are online, and have the game loaded, both of you need to connect to a server by selecting the "Netplay" option in the File menu. You will then see a list of servers which are available for you to use. Pick one that has a low "ping" for both yourself AND your opponent, and click connect. You may wish to change the connection type (bottom right of server screen) to EXCELLENT, for smoother results. Once connected, double check your "ping" in the list of users at the top right to ensure it is satisfactory. If not, disconnecting and re-connecting can sometimes bring it down.

    5.) Start a game
One of you then needs to select the "Start a Game" option in the server window. The game will then appear in the list of games at the bottom, and the opponent simply clicks on this and selects "Join game". Hey presto, that's it - it's as if you were both sat next to each other on the same computer. You'll have to decide who's going to be in charge of handling the menu stuff though, otherwise it'll end up in total chaos!

    Amiga SWOS Online

This version is a bit more complicated, but will give you more satisfactory results and does allow you to play any version of SWOS that you wish, providing you both have the same version.

2.) Download Latest Amiga Emulate, SWOS ROM, and Config file
With the Amiga emulater you can play any version of SWOS that you happen to own for your emulater online (so long as both players own it). So, to play it you need both the new Amiga WinUAE emulater and the SWOS ROMs for it. Don't worry though, you can get them both from this site. Just click HERE for the emulater and HERE for SWOS ECE game files or HERE for SWOS 96/97 game files.. However, you also need to ensure that both players WinUAE's are configured correctly, and are both configured EXACTLY the same, and both configurations are also named EXACTLY the same. To help make this easier for you, here is a configuration which you can download, which sets up WinUAE perfectly for most versions of Amiga SWOS which you will find. Provided both players download and use this configuration, you should be OK (you will need to adjust the paths to your kick.rom and sensible soccer game files!!).

    3.) Find a mate
You'll be very lucky to randomly find a Sensi player on one of the servers, so you'll have to find a mate who wants to play and who also has a fast enough connection. At the top of these instructions, you will find a list of people who may be willing to play. Once you find your opponent, and you are both connected to the 'net and ready to play, load up your emulaters, and your SWOS-online configurations but DONT start the game!
